Fall 2024 Movie Extravaganza

Movies fans will know that fall is when studios put their best foot forward. Some of these are “prestige pictures” intended to garner Oscar buzz while others may be sequels to previously successful movies. Either way, there will be dozens of new releases to consider, so we put together this list of all the ones you might like to know about.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice – September 6, 2024

Forty-six years after Tim Burton tasked Michael Keaton with portraying the titular oddball anti-hero in Beetlejuice, they are teaming up again with much of the original cast returning as well. This one follows Lydia Deetz’s (Winona Ryder) daughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega) who accidentally releases Betelguese upon the town of Winter River once again.

Wolfs – September 20, 2024

This movie teams up Brad Pitt and George Clooney as two professional fixers inadvertently hired to do the same job who are forced to work together. Directed by Jon Watts, who also did the last couple live-action Spiderman movies.

Megalopolis – September 27, 2024

Acclaimed director of The Godfather Trilogy and many other Hollywood classics, Francis Ford Coppola is back with an ambitious, long-gestating project. He even sold off part of his vineyards to help fund it. It follows architect Cesar Catalina (Adam Driver) as he attempts to rebuild a ruined city governed by a corrupt Mayor (Giancarlo Esposito).

Terrifier 3 October 11, 2024

The first two Terrifier movies were notorious for their evocative and boundary-pushing goriness. This one follows the same ultra-violent clown up to his usual violent business but on Christmas Eve.

Anora – October 18, 2024

Sean Baker of The Florida Project returns with this new movie, a follow-up to 2021’s Red Rocket. The titular character (Mikey Madison) is a sex worker who elopes with the son (Mark Eidelstein) of a Russian oligarch. Their plans are disrupted when his parents come to New York to try to force a split.

Venom: The Last Dance – October 25, 2024

The third entry in Sony-Marvel’s Venom series finds Eddie Brock/Venom being tracked by a military soldier (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and a mysterious scientist (Juno Temple).

Joker: Folie à DeuxNovember 4, 2024

The sequel to Todd Phillips’ much-talked-about Joker (2019) starring Joaquin Phoenix is soon upon us, this time adding Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn. The trailer promises far more music (and only slightly more dancing) than the first one.

Heretic – November 15, 2024

Another entry in the A24 horror canon has a seemingly mild-mannered man (Hugh Grant) inviting two teen girl door-to-door evangelists (Chloe East and Sophie Thatcher) into his home which may or may not contain a Saw-like puzzle prison. For those interested in watching seemingly the only other horror movie Hugh Grant has been in, we recommend Ken Russell’s campy The Lair of the White Worm (1988).

Red One – November 15, 2024

Someone has stolen Santa and an elf (Dwayne Johnson) must team up with a world-renowned tracker (Chris Evans) to find him. A new original Santa-centric comedy holiday movie to add to the canon.

Gladiator II – November 22, 2024

It’s been 20 years since the original Gladiator, and director Ridley Scott is dropping his sequel set several decades later. It follows the grandson of Marcus Aurelius (Paul Mescal) as he is forced into servitude by the invading Roman army and decides to fight back. Also starring Denzel Washington, Connie Nielsen and Pedro Pascal.

Moana 2 – November 27, 2024

Disney’s Moana (Auli’i Cravalho) is on a new seafaring adventure with new songs and new friends (but hopefully still that adorable pig). She must once again enlist the power of Maui (Dwayne Johnson) to help her along the way.

Here – November 27, 2024

Prolific director Robert Zemeckis is back again, this time adapting a graphic novel of the same name in which each panel depicts the same corner of a room but at a different moment in time.

Wicked – November 27, 2024

Part one of a two-part film adaptation of the popular musical set in the Wizard of Oz universe. It examines the origins of Elphaba Erivo, a.k.a. The Wicked of the West, (Cynthia Erivo) and Galinda Upland, a.k.a. Glinda the Good (Ariana Grande).
