For over 30 years, the Canton Public Library has come alive in March with a flurry of 1st grade visitors who come to enjoy our First Grade Round Up program.
Each year, 1st grade classes visit the library for a two-and-a-half-hour program. Schools that have visited in the past include Hulsing, Hoben, Tonda, Canton Charter Academy, South Canton Scholars, All Saints Catholic School, Erickson, Dodson, Bentley and many others in the area.
During their adventure here at the library, each class of students is assigned a librarian who takes them on a tour of the Children’s Library, reads a story, then helps them get a library card and make a bookmark. The classes come back together for the chance to see a delightful puppet show and have the opportunity to check out one book with their library card.
While many kids come to the library with their families, students are often very excited to check out a book that they picked out all on their own.
The goal of First Grade Round Up is to make coming to the library fun, and to support reading and literacy. During tours, librarians will ask kids questions to keep them engaged and to help them learn about all the areas in the Children’s Library.
First Grade Round Up is a wonderful program that not only teaches the children about the different parts of the library but also acts as a great reminder of the resources we have that are available to the teachers and parent chaperones who help out.
Many of the kids continue to come back and visit the library after their time here and very excitedly wave and chat with their librarian, even as they get into middle school and above, which builds a great relationship with our community that we love.
