We know that a library card is the key to unlocking the wealth of resources at the Canton Public Library: that's why we offer multiple ways for people to get one. Since March is National Reading Month, it seems like as good a time as any to cover who can obtain a card and how to do it.
Though we do honor cards from other libraries with reciprocal borrowing privileges, you'll need to answer some questions to obtain an actual Canton Public Library card.
- Do you live in Canton?
- Do you live elsewhere but own property in Canton?
- Are you employed at a business that operates in Canton?
- Do you have minor children that go to school in Canton?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, we have good news—you are eligible for a card! (If you answered yes to the last question, technically, your child is getting a card, but ultimately, it's yours anyway because you're legally liable for what they check out until they turn 18.)
We'd love for you to come in and sign up for your card, but we know this is a busy world, and you might not have time for that. That's why we offer the ability to sign up for a card online.
If you're an adult coming in to get a card, you'll need a photo ID and an official document listing your Canton residence on it. A driver's license meets both requirements, but you can also provide a combination of things like a passport, a piece of mail, a lease agreement or an online bill. If you have questions about what might be official, please don't hesitate to contact us.
If you're getting a card because you're employed at a Canton business or your child goes to a Canton school, bring a photo ID, proof of residency, and proof of employment at a Canton business or enrollment in a Canton school. You'll need to show this every year to keep your card active.
Library cards are considered legal contracts, so a parent or guardian must apply for a minor to obtain a library card. You can do that via the link above or by visiting the library and filling out a minor application.
