Know Your Org: Club 55+

"Know Your Org" is an informational series designed to spotlight some of the wonderful organizations in the Canton community. This month we are highlighting Canton's senior center, Club 55+.

Club 55+ is Canton’s very own senior center whose mission is to provide a welcoming environment where seniors can gather to be social, receive services, learn information and have fun.

As the name of the center suggests, Club 55+ offers a wide variety of activities on a daily, weekly and monthly basis that are geared towards individuals who live in Canton and are ages 55 and up. Club 55+ believes that the seniors in the Canton community need a place where they can come to socialize, enjoy themselves and find needed services/information.

Most people think that they need to pay a membership fee to be a part of Club 55+, and that is not true. The Club 55+ Room is available and free to all Canton residents. Many of their activities are also free (including billiards, open cards, mahjong, puzzle table, hobby clubs, ethnic clubs, etc.).

Assistance Offered

Every month, Club 55+ offers multiple programs free of charge for the seniors in the Canton community. Here are some examples:

  • On the second Monday of each month, the center offers a caregiver support group as well as a blood pressure screening by a retired nurse in the center.
  • On the third Monday of each month, they offer a grief support group.
  • On the third Tuesday of the month, the Senior Alliance comes in to offer Medicare counseling for seniors in the community.
  • Finally, on the fourth Thursday of the month, Club 55+ offers pet therapy in the Club 55+ Room.

Regular Programs

There are a variety of programs available on the weekly schedule, and here are just a few of their offerings:

  • In the Club 55+ Room, there are table games offered each day from noon-4:00 PM ranging from euchre to mahjong—there are also open billiards all day.
  • For seniors who are looking to be active, there are a multitude of senior-oriented exercise classes that are offered at the Summit on the Park.
  • Each month, the center has scheduled Yahtzee and bingo events.
  • Club 55+ has an afghan/handcrafter group and wood carving group that meet weekly.
  • There are multiple social clubs and groups that meet weekly/monthly, for example, the Asian Indian, Asian Pacific, Pioneers Luncheon, and Red Hot Mermaids social clubs. Check out their website for more information on the different clubs.
