Make the Most of Free Comic Book Day

The first Saturday in May is Free Comic Book Day, a national celebration where readers can get free comic books and cheer on all things comic-related.

Comic books have captured our attention for nearly 100 years. While most people associate comics with superheroes like DC or Marvel, the stories told range from supernatural to “normal.” Popular TV shows and movies, like Stranger Things or Star Wars, have also been made into comics. The format’s stories are diverse and widely published, with something for every age group.

Here are a few ways you can celebrate National Comic Book Day in 2025.

Canton Public Library Free Comic Book Day Event 2025

Every year, the Canton Public Library has different free comic book titles available to patrons of all ages featuring some of your favorite comic characters. Also, there will be fun activities for all ages and maybe even a surprise visitor.

Discover a New Comic Book

Read a comic book online or in print. Try browsing our collection of current series. You can also get comics digitally—use hoopla to download comics onto your tablet or smartphone. To find comics on hoopla, sign up for an account using your Canton Public Library card number.

Comics Plus is another online service that offers thousands of digital comics, graphic novels and manga. Just download the app, available in the Google Play or Apple App Stores, or log in on your computer to explore the dozens of publishers and thousands of comics, graphic novels and manga.

Get Caught Up in the Next Big Story

Big comic companies with shared universes, like Marvel and DC, often use Free Comic Book Day to preview their upcoming summer stories. The issues will contain everything you need to know to get caught up, but if you want to go back and see the events that led up to an upcoming summer issue as they happen, you can go back and read recent DC and Marvel graphic novel collections on hoopla.
