Make the Most of Free Comic Book Day

The first Saturday in May is Free Comic Book Day, a national celebration where readers can get free comic books and cheer on all things comic-y.

Comic books have captured our attention for nearly 100 years. While most people associate comics with superheroes like DC or Marvel, the stories told range from supernatural to “normal.” Popular TV shows and movies, like Stranger Things or Star Wars, have also been made into comics. The format’s stories are diverse and widely published. There are stories published for every age group.

Here are a few ways you can celebrate National Comic Book Day in 2024.

Discover a New Comic Book

Read a comic book online or in print. Try browsing our collection of current series. You can also get comics digitally—use hoopla to download comics onto your tablet or smartphone. To find comics on hoopla, make sure you sign up for an account by using your Canton Public Library card number.

Comics Plus is another online service that offers thousands of digital comics, graphic novels and manga. Just download the app, available as Library Pass in the Google Play Store and LibraryPass in the Apple App Store, or log in on your computer to explore the dozens of publishers and thousands of comics, graphic novels and manga.

Get Caught Up in the Next Big Story

Big comic companies with shared universes like Marvel and DC often use their Free Comic Book Day issues to preview their big summer stories. The issues will contain everything you need to know to get caught up, but if you want to go back and see the events that lead up to the upcoming summer event as they happen, you can go back and read recent DC and Marvel graphic novel collections on hoopla.
