Storytime: Sharks

Did you miss storytime? Perhaps it is just one of those days when you need a boost with your little ones. Fret not. We have gathered some storytime resources for you at home, thanks to Librarian Lindsey. Follow our steps below or mix and match for the ultimate storytime experience.

Today’s Theme: Sharks

1. Take a Moment

We like to practice mindful breathing at the start of storytime. This helps you get focused on the story. You can practice mindful breathing anytime. It is a helpful skill for when you have big feelings. We like to use Alphabreaths: The ABCs of Mindful Breathing by Christopher Willard and Daniel Rechtschaffen. Let’s do “Underwater Breath”:

Underwater Breath: Paddle your arms, imagining you are underwater. Breathe in and out, blowing bubbles through your scuba gear.

2. Read a Book about Sharks

You can find picture books about all kinds of sharks at the library. While many are pretend, you can learn about real sharks in others. Even books about pretend sharks can teach you something amazing. Did you know that sharks are some of the oldest animals on Earth? Be sure to share your favorite shark with your family or a friend!

3. Rhyme: Three Little Fishies

Three little fishies, swimming in the sea, teasing Mr. Shark:
“You can’t catch me!”
When along swam Mr. Shark, as quiet as can be…
AND
(clap hands) caught that fishy right out of the sea!

Two little fishies, swimming in the sea, teasing Mr. Shark:
“You can’t catch me!”
When along swam Mr. Shark, as quiet as can be…
AND
(clap hands) caught that fishy right out of the sea!

One little fishy, swimming in the sea, teasing Mr. Shark:
“You can’t catch me!”
When along swam Mr. Shark, as quiet as can be…
AND
(clap hands) caught that fishy right out of the sea!

So alone swam Mr. Shark as quiet as can be
And he looked and he looked…
“No more fishies for me.”

3. Activity: Pretend Sharks

Pretend you’re a hungry bull shark! Bull sharks will eat anything they can find. For this activity, you can carry a bag or basket and “eat” things by putting them in the bag/basket. Pretend you’re a bull shark and “eat” silly things you find. Share what you ate with a friend or family member when you’re done eating.

4. Sing a Goodbye Song

See you next time! Wrap up your storytime and sing along with our librarians to Skinnamarink.
