The Dog Days of Summer: Celebrating National Dog Month

 

National Dog Month celebrates our loveable canine pals smack in the middle of the dog days of summer. Whether you're seeking a nearby adoption event, exciting dog-centric happenings or a curated selection of dog-friendly locales, you'll find it all right here.

Dog Adoption Events

Pet Supplies Plus (Canton) – Meet adoptable dogs the first Saturday of each month from noon to 3:00 PM, courtesy of the Homeward Bound Rescue League.

Love Train Adoptions  - Meet adoptable puppies, young dogs and kitties on the Humane Society of Huron Valley Love Train on Friday, August 9 and Friday, August 23. The Love Train helps transport animals from struggling rescues and shelters. 

Paws, Pours & More: a Benefit for Last Day Dog Rescue - Saturday, August 10 from 4:00 - 8:00 PM at the Wilson Barn in Livonia. 

Become a Foster

Do you have room in your heart (and home) for a furry friend? Become a foster with Bottle Babies, a nonprofit animal rescue based in Plymouth.

Food and Dining

  • Three Dog Bakery in Plymouth – Dogs are allowed inside; they must be leashed.
  • Maverick’s in Canton – Dogs are permitted in the outdoor patio seating area. They offer snacks and water for your pup. 

Shopping

Fun Outdoor Activities in Canton Parks

  • Heritage Park – Located behind the Canton Township Administrative Building and the Canton Public Library, Heritage Park features multiple paved walking paths and doggy waste bag stations throughout the park. Dogs must remain leashed at all times.
  • Canton Farmers Market – This open-air market runs on Sundays from mid-May to mid-October—9:00 AM to 1:00 PM—in Preservation Park. Leashed dogs are welcome.

Special Dog Events

Check out Doggy Dip at Rolling Hills Water Park, 7660 Stony Creek Rd, Ypsilanti. This annual event is held the Saturday after Labor Day. The pool is closed to humans, but dogs are welcome to come enjoy the water. There is a limit of two dogs per human.

This event does charge a small fee per dog and requires registration; see the Rolling Hills website for information.
