Where Can I Pray in the Library?

At Canton Public Library, we believe in fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone who walks through our doors.

We recognize that people of various religious backgrounds may need to pray during their library visits, particularly if they’re spending extended periods of time with us. To support these needs, we want to offer some helpful guidance on where you can find a suitable space for your prayers while ensuring that everyone’s library experience remains enjoyable and respectful.

In general, patrons are welcome to pray anywhere in the library, as long as they follow our code of conduct regarding volume levels, blocking pathways or preventing others from using the library.

Here are some examples of areas that are suitable spaces for praying.

Study Rooms

One of the most flexible options for prayer is to use our study rooms. These rooms are available on a first-come, first-served basis and offer a quiet space where you can pray, usually without disturbance.

Please note that our group study rooms, labeled A-J, give preference to groups, so single users may be asked to vacate a room if all rooms are filled and a group arrives seeking a study room.

Quiet Corners and End of Book Aisles

Another option is to find a quiet corner of the library, such as the end of a book aisle. For example, you might choose a spot at the end of our adult fiction shelves in the aisle facing the windows. While this allows for a more open space, please keep in mind the following guidelines:

  • Avoid Blocking Foot Traffic: Ensure that your chosen spot does not obstruct walkways or create a barrier for other patrons. This helps everyone navigate the library comfortably.
  • Minimize Disruption: Be mindful of the noise level and avoid any activities that might disrupt other users. Our goal is to ensure that all patrons can enjoy their time in the library, whether they’re studying, browsing or relaxing.

We are committed to providing a space where everyone feels comfortable and respected. If you have any questions or need assistance finding a suitable location for prayer, please don’t hesitate to ask one of our staff members. We’re here to help and ensure that your visit to the library is both fulfilling and attentive to all our patrons’ needs.

Thank you for being part of our library community and for helping us maintain an environment that honors both personal and collective needs.
